Any advice on the 2003 Evinrude 225hp with DFI? I have an opportunity to buy a used one to repower my '87 22 Revenge WT.

I know the V6 Fichts had some problems 2001 and older but have not heard of any problems for 2002 and later.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Awesome from what I hear. It was also the 98-2000 150 & 175hp that were the problem engines as well.

I haven't seen any negative reports on the 2002 or 2003 Evinrude 200, 225 or 250s. I recently acquired two 2002 Evinrude 225s. They are strong, quiet and do not smoke. The unadvertised output is said to be in the neighborhood of 235 to 240 HP.

I did have a counter rotating gearcase self destruct but it was because the wrong (undersized) gearcase was put on the motor by a dealer to make it a counter-rotating motor. Bombardier is covering this under warranty.

I bought a 2003 75HP Evinrude DFI and I love it. There was a promo that if you bought the motor prior to 4/15/2003 you got either a rebate or a 7 year total nondeclining warranty (I took the warranty as I believe most would). I also believe it is transferrable so check that out with the owner of the motor.

As a comparision, my DFI uses easily 40% less gas and a whole lot less oil (I used a gallon all summer and we live on a river and use the boat at least 3-4X per week). It is so quiet that at idle you can hardly hear it. At WOT, the water sounds and wind sounds are about as loud as the motor.

No smoke, instant starts and lots of torque. Great motor.
