What is the approx. gas mileage of 2003 '17 Montauk with a 90hp engine? What is the gas mileage of any boston whaler?

I have measured 4.5mpg on several occasions with my 2002 90 Mercury 2stroke/ 1977 montauk.

Kennith, are you talking about a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Here's a charting of a Boating Magazine test report of the 170 Montauk with 4-stroke 90hp motor:

At 2,000 rpm off-plane (before it starts plowing) and at 3,500 rpm on-plane, it got over a bit over 5 mpg. This was with two men in the boat, IIRC.

This is a wide range to answer. My Montauk with a 70hp 4 stroke gets about 10mpg at cruise(26mph), 25mpg at 5-6mph, and 5.5 at WOT.

It's not the boat that gets the milage, it's the type of engine.
A 4 stroke or DFI will certainly out do an older 2 stroke.
Heck, my 20' outrage with 200 hp DFI gets 5.5 mpg at cruise [ 3200 rpms, about 29 - 30 mph ].
As Bigshot noted, he gets about 10 mpg @ cruise with his 4 stroke 70 hp.
The more speed you want, the less mpg you will get.

My whaler 17 montuak with a 90 hp Johnson 2 stroke (carburated) gets about 3 mpg.

while my buddy in a new 170 montauk with his 90 hp Mercury 4 stroke gets about 5 mpg.

Have you looked at the etec motor ? the specs are pretty good.

At what RPM are you referring to?

My 90hp Johnson got about 4+mpg @ 4000rpm which was about 29mph. My 90 Yamaha 2 stroke got about 5mpg at 4k as well. My 70 4 stroke gets about 10mpg.....actually sometimes about 12mpg @ cruise, amazing mileage.

Be glad you don't get my gas mileage. I get 1.9 mpg at cruise (32mph) with twin 130 carbureted 2-stroke Yamahas.

I would like to ask a corollary question:

How fast does a Boston Whaler go?

Depends on the half life of the fiberglass and the foam which I don't think we know just yet:)

My 115 Suzuki 4-stroke get a little over 6 mpg and it doesn't seem to matter if I am cruising or running wide open at 6000 rmp.
