Is rebuilding the carburetors for a '94 85 hp Yamaha too difficult of a project for an average do-it-yourselfer? Yes, I probably am giving myself more credit than I deserve. If you were going to take on this project, where would you buy the rebuild kit?

No need for kits unless you break the gaskets(doubtful). The main jets etc just need to be cleaned out. Best way to do it is with Acetelyne torch cleaners which come in a small kit at any Napa or automotive store. These are small files like wire that you reem out the jet holes and then blow out with compressed air.

Try NAPA for aftermarket parts, supposedly they sell the same stuff as WestMarine. Any Yamaha dealer, boat motor sales/repair or not, should be able to get you OEM parts. Look on eBay for a service manual for your motor, I got one for my Johnson and am thankful. I've never rebuilt your particular carb, but have many others for various applications, it's not that hard. Just give yourself time, space, meaning clean space to lay out all your parts, and don't do it while watching TV. Hope this helps.
