Ran across this 85' 70 hp Evinrude/VRO. I have no manual or refrences for this unit. Want to do a little tune up on her. What is the spark plug gap for this unit? Should the VRO be disconnected? And what is OMC required tourqe on the prop shaft castle nut? Thanks.

I had a 1985 70hp Evinrude since new and just sold it last year.
I never had a problem with anything including the VRO. Some people disconnect them but I would never do that myself as VRO is the only way to go for me.

The book called for a spark plug gap of .040 but OMC changed that later and started gapping all the Champion, QL77JC4 plugs, at .030.
Even my 1985hp Evinrude which used a permanent gapped plug changed to the QL77JC4 gapped at .030.

I don't remember the exact torque for the prop but it isn't that important on a 70hp.. Just make it so it's tight, not snug. I believe my 150hp has 150 ft pounds of torque.
