The first propeller on my Montauk 170 with a 90-HP 4-stroke was a Vengeance 13.25 x 18 . The maximum RPM was 6200 WOT (2nd mounting hole). The second propellor is a 4-blade Trophy Plus 13.75 x 19 . The maximum RPM was 5400 WOT (3 mounting hole). This propeller is giving too much lift when the motor is on WOT. The boat is very difficult to handle at WOT.

Is a Laser II (13.25 x 20) the right propeller for this boat? The 2003 Mercury 90-HP 4-stroke has a gear ratio 2.33:1.

Do you have the speed numbers to go with this data?

The vengeance 13,25 x 18: 42,0 mph
The trophy plus 13,75 x 19: 43,1 mph, but its very hard to handle and has a slow hole shot. The midrange is perfect!!
(3000-4500 rpm).

I have the same boat, same 90 HP 4-Stroke outboard and same factory provided Vengeance prop and hit 41 MPH at 5500 RPM WOT. Maybe one or both of our Tachs are off. Jim

Those Trophy props are mostly recommended for Flats and Bass boats. The pitch rating is usually deceptive, and they seem to have an effective pitch much higher. A 17" pitch would be better in that line.

Whether or not the engine could turn up a Laser II in 20" (lowest available) I don't know, but it is a "tamer" prop than the Trophy 4 blade.

Another alternative would be a 19" Michigan Wheel SS Rapture. These will fit the Mercury interchangeable hub system.

Thanks for the info!

I try the laser II (13,25 x 20).
What vent plugs can i use the best for this propeller?

Mercury generally recommends the medium size vent plugs for outboard use. Laser's come shipped with small size vents.
Try those out first.

I also use the 13.25 x 20 Laser II on my '04 Montauk. I have the 90 2 stroke and a 27 Pate. With two adults and one seven year old, calm seas and fishing gear, we can go at least 42mph. This speed is shown on my Garmin 188C. The RPM is at approx. 5300-5400 at this speed.

What vent plugs are you using?
