I just put my boat in the water this weekend and the MPH gauge was not working. I have a striper 1985 essentially a side consoled montauk. I was curious if anyone could give me an idea of top end...it sure felt squirrley.

Details: No bottom paint, Bimini was up, old Evinrude 4 cylinder 90 (1986)

Seemed like it was hustling around 4k RPM and Wide Open was around 5200. Don't know the prop, but was looking for a range.

As an aside, the steering wheel wants to go right. If I were to let go of the wheel it would slowly then faster turn itself. Is that cause of the side console weight distribution.

Thanks for any info

Dave,

Top end on my 1974 Katama with a similar (1982 90 Evinrude) engine, 17" pitch ss prop, and just me in it is 42 mph by GPS with a top rpm at wot of 5200.

All boats want to pull to the right. Rotate the trim tab, behind the skeg, clockwise and it should steer straighter. If that doesn't work, you might want to consider a no-feedback-steering system. Uflex and Teleflex / Morse make them for your boat for about $150 - 200.

I have a 1982 striper with a 50 hp. i get up to about 35 mph trimmed out. you should be getting around the upper 40's to lower 50's depending on prop and water conditions.

whalerboy14,

He has a 17 foot striper, not a 15'.

Yes, it is a 17 foot striper...I mean it seems to get pretty uncomfortably fast in that thing. I was just curious to the top end. Thanks for all the info
