A friend of mine is buying a 2000 13 whaler with a 2001 30hp mercury 2 stroke. He sea trialed the boat with him and his son and every thing seemed fine, later with his son , wife, and two dogs on board the boat would not plane
I don't know anything about black motors, what he did tell me was the boat has only been used 2 or 4 times since new and with two on board the motor turned 5100 rpms. With a light load that seemed a little low to me.
If anybody has this set up what prop and rpms are you running? He does have tilt and trim and that did not help.
My thought was the dealer just guessed at the prop and the previous owner never used the boat enough to know anything has wrong. He was not able to tell me the size prop he was running.
thanks for any ideas

i had a similar experience with my 13 footer, 40hp evinrude. Here's what I did to fix it:
$17.00 aftermarket "fins" that install on the cavitation plate on the engine. Now, I'm on-plane within 20ft.

I'm confused...he drove it and it was fine but then it was not fine? Is she running on both cyls? Maybe he knocked off a spark plug wire when putting the cowl back on? Would it plane with kid up front?

Something's not right unless his son and wife are REALLY big people and his dogs are giant Malamutes.
That boat should jump right up with a 30 and that amount of weight.

Ran fine with him and a 14 year old , 5100 rpm added his wife and 2 dogs about 625lbs total. and it would not plane. Wife and dogs in front he and his son in back.
I am confused too my 13 with a 25 will plane with 5 adults and gear.

625 was the TOTAL, not the weight of his wife and dogs

Wrong prop.....625 is not a light load in my Montauk.

I think wrong prop too. I think that motor is 5000 to 5500 wot and if he is at 5100 with 2 people he needs to go down at least an inch.

Or 2 inches...

We have a 1998 13 and 1998 30 hp merc with power trim and a 13 pitch ss prop. It has no problem getting plane with 4 people and gear. Hopefully we'll use it this evening and I'll pay more attention to speed and rpm.
