I finally worked out the prop pitch using the standard aluminum Black Max. Now that I have managed to ding that one up good, I am looking to swap out to a stainless prop. Both the Laser II and the Vensura have been suggested. The boat is a 18 Outrage with a Merc 150 V6. Suggestions one way or the other?

I am looking for a prop that will get the boat up on plane and also be good a midrange crusing.

kamie,

You mention that you have the prop pitch sorted out, but don't mention what that pitch is. The Laser II only goes down to 19 pitch while the VenSura goes down to 17.

A good friend of mine has the 17 pitch Offshore (VenSura) on his 1992, 150HP 2-stroke Outrage 19 and absolutely loves it. His boat is supposedly about 600# heavier than yours.

I just put a 17 pitch Offshore (VenSura) on my 21' Walkaround and am delighted with it. Excellent hole shot and great holding power. Very important: For outboard applications be sure and change the solid vent plugs to the medium-hole plugs for best performance. They are $.95/ea from your Mercury dealer.

Either prop will give you good performance with the Laser II geared more for top speed and the VenSura geared more for mid-range and lifting/holding power.

thanks Steve,
I currently have a 17p Black Max on the boat trimmed out correctly when I go WOT she spins at 6000 RPM's which is high. Range is between 5000 and 5600. I knew that I would be over the range with the 17. So if I drop back down to the 19p (tops out at ~5600) I could do either. Since planing power and crusing are more important than lighting speed I will keep my eyes open for a Vensura.

Thanks. The 17p over revs the engine so I am looking to step back to a 19p I got a good deal on ebay for a 19p Laser II which I plan to try after Ivan blows through and if it works ok, I'll use it until I find a 19p Offshore.

I have the Power Tech UN200OFS4R15P on my 150 Opti. I am very happy with the performance. I feel that the larger diameter props really help with the Whalers. I tried the Mirage Plus (came with boat),Vensura, and the Power Tech. The Vensura was a close second to the Power Tech. The people at Power Tech are VERY helpful in selecting the proper prop and will adjust or exchange the prop to suit your needs, unlike Mercury. See my post on "Nantucket Re-Prop" in this section.

Mark,

thanks for the info, I saw your post on the Nantucket. You say the Vensura was a close second, differences between the two props? What was the ultimate goal of changing the prop for you?
