Divide the horsepower rating by ten, and this is the number of gallons per hour the engine will burn at wide-open-throttle (WOT). It will burn proportionately less at lower throttle settings.Despite many declarations to the contrary, most all two-stroke engines consume about the same amount of fuel, except for modern Direct-Injection engines such as the Optimax, the Ficht, or the E-TEC. This is true with either carburetor or fuel-injection engines, white or black, foreign or domestic. Very old two strokes, with a cross-flow design, are somewhat worse, that is, they consume even more fuel. |

As with automobiles, fuel mileage on boats will vary with driving habits and jack rabbit hole shots and extensive W OT will reduce! Also and outboard out of tune, with wrong prop and/or inefficient trim angle will consume more fuel. The hull type will effect mileage going from very deep V to flat bottom (deep V using the most fuel). At any given speed the horsepower used will be virtually the same reguardless of hp rating of the engine... blah, blah, blah... Clark.. SCN |

Getting back to the question, my Outrage 25, with twin Mercury 1989 carburated 2.4 liter 200's, got about 1.75 MPG under good cruising conditions, about 30 mph. The same boat, re-powered with 1997 Mercury 2.5 liter 200 EFI's, gets 2.0 mpg. I am absolutely convinced that an EFI engine gets better gas and oil mileage than a carburated version. From what I can tell, 3.0 liter 2-strokes, any brand, generally get lousy gas mileage. And from recent experience in a 240 Outrage with twin 150 Optimax engines, I could predict that the 25 Outrage with those engine would get better than 3.0 MPG. I would also guess that the OMC 2.6 liter 150's would give about 1.75 MPG on the 25 |
