I wanted to pass along my experience with repowering my 1993 sport 15 gls. It came with a 1993 Johnson 50. The engine ran smooth and had great compression but constantly had minor issues (like flooding easily and always stalling when I docked). I decided to repower and looked very hard at all the options. For me it was between a Yamaha 50 or 60 (four stroke and two stroke). I finally decided on the 50 four stroke because of fuel consumption and the fact that it was quiet. Everyone told me that weight is a concern on the four strokes but the 05's are lighter than their previous versions and they are fuel injected for quicker starts & better fuel efficiency.

I decided on buying the engine from Central Florida Yamaha in Lake Placid, Florida. They were very nice, have the best prices and they have a great website "www.boats.net". They did the work for me but they also will ship anywhere (as long as it's to a dealer vs. to an individual). They also have hundreds of motors in stock currently.

During the repower and when they were mounting the new motor they almost gave me a heart attack when they said the new motor may not fit. The concern was that the motor needed to be mounted so that the cavitation plate on it lined up or was lower than the bottom of the hull. Becuase of that, the lower mounting holes were very close to the bottom of the splash well and they were concerned that they couldn't fit a nut on the through bolt. After close measurement it just fit (by about 1/8" to 1/4". (A jack plate would eliminate this concern).

Since the repower, I'm happy to say that the boat feels like brand new now. The engine is so quiet and performs great! I had it at 36mph with a full tank of gas, and two adults aboard. It doesn't sit stearn heavy either. I noticed that to avoid "porpoising" the motor needs to be trimmed down a bit.

All in all I would highly recommend this boat for anyone who wants a simple, easy to maintain, easy to trailer, great kids boat.

I find the fit concern strange since the motors should mount up to an industry standard bolt pattern. I repowered my 15 hull from a 48 Johnson to a 70 Yamaha 2-stroke and there was no problem with bolt alignment. In my case, which I believe was standard, the lower bolts in were located to thread into the blind holes in the motor bracket. I assume that a Yamaha 50 4-stroke has such blind holes.

Peter,
That's what I assumed as well however, the bolt pattern on each engine was definitely different. Very bizarre.
