A friend suggested that I use Boyesen Reeds on my 2002 Mercury 50-HP on my 13-foot classic Boston Whaler boat. I am told that I can expect a smoother idle, better economy, and improved top end. I can't find any information that will quantify this. See: www.boyesen.com |

Jon, these are fiberglas/composite reeds versus the stock steel reeds. They will tolerate very high RPM without work hardening, chipping, or breaking, and, if one does break or chip, the engine will pass it through without seizing or breaking the engine, as a steel reed is apt to do. They are best suited for racing and high speed use and wear out or need replacement unlike stock steel reeds. My only experience was a set I installed in a 1990 Yamaha Pro-50 in which the results were not so great. Performance degraded in about 6 months of use and in two years so bad that I replaced the stock reeds. Unfortunately the center cyl had scored... another story.. blah, blah, blah, ... happy Whalin'... Clark... Spruce Creek Navy |

Have used several sets of these reeds in a 1/4 mile boat I ran for several years. I never saw any benefit there and had to change away from these reeds due to the fact that they eventually warped slightly, which created a very poor idle. Never broke one but once I changed back to steel I gained all my consistancy back. |
