There has been a fair amount of discussion here about kickers of various makes and sizes, and their respective features and weak and strong points; Jim Hebert has published an article of mine on the installation of a Yamaha T8 kicker on my Outrage 22, and Joe Kriz and others have posted some great information about kicker projects they have finished. I liked the T8 because it is 4-stroke, high thrust, remotely controlled and has electric tilt.

Well let me tell you what I stumbled on at the Toronto Boat Show over the weekend. Apparently Yamaha has been marketing a T9.9 in Canada for at least the past 3 years, that has a 15 HP power head and *electric tilt*! I layed my eyes and hands right on one at the show, and the Yamaha rep showed me their literature from the past 3 years, with that model as a part of their line up. It never occurred to me that Yamaha (or any outboard mfr.) might have a different line up in their motors from the States to Canada! I'm still happy with my T8, but living as close to Canada as I do, and spending the amount od time there that I do each year, I probably would have chosen to find an electric tilt T9.9 in Canada had I been aware of them. It is reported to only weigh about 10 more pounds than the T8.

Just to clarify the difference that I am talking about, there *is* a T9.9 (high thrust 4-stroke) available in the States, but it is apparently *not* based on the 15 hp power head (that in and of itself is not necessarily significant to me), but the biggest difference is that the US model does *not* have electric tilt.

Surprised in Battle Creek-

I finally got an answer of what's new for 2005. The T9.9 is listed as a new model for 2005 on Yamaha website and all their 2005 literature but nobody seemed to know what the "new" was. Well, it appears they have upped the displacement to share the 15 hp model. Sure enough I looked through the 2004 literature and the 9.9 was a stand alone displacement. The T8 was smaller and the 15 was larger. Of course with the added displacement comes another 8# and still no power trim in the U.S.

I still have 3 months to make up my mind yet. I was not very exited about getting another 9.9 after mine melted down and they haven't made any changes to it for years. Most felt the T8 had as much power as the T9.9 but only has a 6 amp charging system. I do like the power trim option. It would come in handy. I was looking at the 9.9 Honda with power trim. Their "power thrust" model is similar in weight and appears the only change is a bit larger 4 blade prop and has 12 amp charging system with the electric start models.

Another forum I have been monitoring has had a thread going about one persons problems with his T9.9 that was "making oil" and appears to be having lots of problems getting it fixed.

It actually got above freezing here in good old Minne' today and I'm going to start tearing mine down. Maybe I can find a junk motor with a good powerhead and piece it together. Should be plenty of scrapped insurance motors after all the "weather" this year. My local outboard salvage yard guy went to Florida with a big truck shortly after New Years and I don't think he planned on coming home empty!!!
