I have an '84 Supersport, had a 90hp Evinrude with a 17"prop that would push her up into the high 30's @ 5000rpm's......I have a 115 on the way, and would like to know which prop (high dollar or not) would give me a good top end and a mellow cruising speed. any favorites?

For your setup on a 17' Whaler, Mercury Laser II, as long as you can turn 20" of pitch or higher. This is the fastest mid range gearcase prop you can buy, with adjustable venting and hub for any brand engine. About $265-$300 bought right (Buddy's prop shop on E-bay)! Mount your engine up about 1-1/2" for a prop like this.

The OMC Raker props are also reported to be excellent, but I have no experience with them.

Change the price on that Merc Laser II prop at Buddy's Wholsale props on E-bay Store to $332, plus shipping cost of about $12. These are the best prices I have found.

Whoah...do you think I'll be able to go from a 17 pitch on the 90hp to a 20" with the Johnson 115? Is there that much difference? Are you saying the Merc prop can come hubbed for the Johnson? (I"m sure my ignorance is an annoyance to some, thank you for putting up with me :)

I have no idea what pitch a Johnson 115 ( 2-stroke or 4-stroke?) will turn on a 17' Whaler, since gear ratios and max RPM redline are also involved. I just said IF, since that is the lowest pitch they make in that design. These props are generally designed for boats that will do over 45 mph.

I do know that if set up properly, a Merc 90 (2.33 ratio)will turn that prop, and give you high 40's. So would a Merc 115, with 2.07 ratio.

It's all in the gear ratios. Mercury's props since 1994 can be used on any brand engine. And I think they make the best props, with the most advanced features and design, generally that you can buy.

If you can't turn up 20", you might consider a Michigan Wheel Rapture series aftermarket prop, in lower, odd numbered pitches. These are the same as a Stilleto, but have the advantage of using Mercury's interchangeable hub components. This greatly adds to the re-sale flexibility of the item, since it can be used on any brand engine with the purchase of a $40 hub kit.

[Changed TOPIC; was "the best prop".]

What size is your boat? This will have a big impact on your speed potential.

Depends on the engine like Larry said. also depends on the mounting height etc. Your 90 should have turned about 5300 with a 17" giving you about 42+. My 17 montauk woith an older 115 would turn a 19" so a new 115 should be able to swing a 19 or 20, maybe even a 21" depending on where redline is gonna be and gear ratio.

gear ratio is 2-1, 4500-5500rpm range, have a hyd. jackplate so height of motor is changable. something I just thought of, I'm sitting @ 2500' above sealevel and I know the higher ya are, the more ya lose. I'd be tickled pink if I could swing a 19-20 pitch prop.
