does anyone know of a fram or other super center store brand oil filter for a 60 4 stroke mercury bigfoot 2004? also, any recommendations on weight of synthetic oil for this moter.

Please satisfy my curiosity, but why not just get the OEM oil filter? Scrimping a couple of dollars on an oil filter for a $8,000 engines does not seem like a good way to save.

The oil filter probably won't affect the boat's performance, except in a very negative way if it fails.

Also, FRAM is about the cheapest oil filter made. I wouldn't use them in a beater car that burned oil. They're junk.

My oil filter in my new 60 EFI Yamaha disintegrated in the first 5 hours putting debris in the crankcase. This was a stock Yamaha filter that came with the motor. So much for Yamaha quality. high sierra

Wow! Don't like hearing that! 2005 started yesterday for first 5 minutes of life and activated warranty. What do you use for a filter now? Do you use a water seperator? Really never wanted to hang one in a 15 before. Thanks. zot.

Z, I use the mercury filter with the paper insert as opposed to the Yamaha with the fibre filling. Yes I do use a fuel filter , the stainless steel one from Cabela's. I also had 2 fuel leaks from those 2 cent clamps they use. Reclamped with bmc clamps. Due to altitude and underpowered motor , I have 5 props searching for the right one. Motor runs OK now. Motor is on a 15.4 high sierra

High, you sound a little frustrated. Haven't tried new outboard yet but I like how the discount house I chose decided (yeah, right) which prop would be right for the 15. Will be interesting, I'm sure. What year is your 15'4? And are you calling it underpowered because of elevation factors? I hope I did not find this out late. Now I have found myself purchasing a jack plate just to utilize existing transom mounting holes. LOVELY. zot.

Z , You are right.I am frustrated with the 60 EFI Yamaha. The altitude is the main culprit ( 5000 to 7000 ft) and the lack of cubic inches. The motor is barely ( make that not)the equivalent of a good 40 hp Johnson , which it replaced. My 15.4 is a 1976 . I had a jack plate on at first but took it off because of a surge of water which come up between the transom and the plate flooding the motor and shooting water in the boat when accelerating.The water was deflecting off the antiventilation plate and the smaller plate. Jack plates are HIGHLY overated. The boat would not plane at 5000 feet! The Yamaha does get excellent gas mileage and does idle well. The oil filter and gas leaks are unforgiveable. When contacted by Yamaha, initially , I wrote down all the problems at that time. ZERO response.
I now have as well, a 170 Montauk with a 115 Mercury EFI. Now that motor is a strong motor and starts instantly.
Also I do have factory manuals on both of these motors and have been working for dealers and in my own shop for 40 years. Sorry for the rant. But now I feel better. high sierra
