Looking for speeds at WOT with a 135 optimax vs 150 optimax

This is going to be hard to answer because there was no 1999 Outrage 18.

I just put a deposit on a used 18' outrage with a 135 optimax from a loc. broker, the package has approx. 30 hours on it. The broker had the orig. paperwork from the selling dealer that said it was a 1999, I went on to Boston Whalers site and could not find any info based on a 1999 model year but did find info. for a model year 2000. I thought that was odd. The ser. # on the hull ends with 99? The boat was purchased new in Jan. 00. I was curious to find out how the boat performs in heavy seas and what the top speed @ WOT is and if you pull skiers or wake boarders. Are you aware of any problems with the 135 Optimax, Any info. would be very helpful I still have time to back out.

I looked at my 1999 catalog and cannot find the 18 Outrage listed anyplace. I can only find the 18 Outrage listed in the 2000 catalog...

You need to look at the Hull Identification number and look at the last 2 digits. If they read, 00, then it would be a 2000 model. If they read, 99, then the catalogs are not correct as it would be a 1999 model.

Just re-read your post. Not enough coffee yet.

If the tag ends with 99, then it is a 1999 model.
There have been other year models that were not listed in the catalogs so I am assuming this is another one of those variations.

Based on the performance charts that I've seen, the Mercury 135 Optimax is a very strong performer. I wouldn't expect that much difference between that motor and the 150.

However, the 2000 18' Outrage is a heavy boat that is rated for a maximum of 200 hp.

There is indeed a 1999 18' Outrage...I own one. This model was only made for a limited amount of time...1999-2000. According to Chuck Bennett at Boston Whaler, the cost to build them (and the high selling price) were too close to the 21' Outrage...so most people bought the 21.

It is a huge 18 with a fairly deep-V...18'4" long and 8'3" beam. It weighs 2500 lbs. dry and has a built-in 90 gallon gas tank, built-in fishboxes, stainless steel toerails, and many other great features. I take mine out on Lake Michigan regularly in all sorts of conditions.

Mine originally shipped with a 135 Optimax on it, but I bought it as a bare boat and repowered last year with a Honda BF150...here are some photos: www.bcell.com/tom

Thank's for all the info. I did call Boston Whaler today and they did manufacture the 18 Outrage for 2 years (1999 & 2000) I asked why they stopped production and the response was it was almost as much to produce the 18' as the 21 and not enough sales to offset the cost. Customers would opt. to purchase the 21 for a little more money. I was also told that top speed @ WOT for the 135 Optimax with a 17 pitch prop. is 41+ MPH with 2 adults and 1/2 tank of fuel and gear. It takes approx. 5 seconds to plane as well. I also asked how the boat would do with a 200 HP eng., mid to upper 50's depending on prop. On my way to buy!

Thanks,

Warren

I have updated my Outrage 18 list to include the newer 1999 and 2000 Outrage 18's.

If anyone would like to add their numbers to the list, please do so.

Wow, Tom that looks like a real beefy boat for only an 18'. I am sure it is great for a run out on Lake Michigan or just on Spring lake (noticed the plate and then saw you were in fruitport).

Are you sure it's not a 2000 18' Outrage that was made in '99??

My 1986 18 was made in 1985. Could be a model year 2000 boat manufactured in 1999.

Buckda,

I know they made the 2000 but no one has submitted their 1999 numbers to confirm this model.

Joe, I submitted my info for your listing, but thought I'd post it here as well. I have a 1999 18' Outrage...Hull #BWCLB078D999.

Jeff, we are actually in the process of moving from West Bloomfield to Fruitport. The Outrage is in storage in Spring Lake and I'm just waiting for the Grand Haven channel to melt before I hit the big lake.

Tom, I saw the pictures of your Outrage, she is a beautiful boat. I have a question about mounting the BF150 and propeller choices. I sent you an e-mail.

Perry

I also have a 1999 Outrage 18. Will post numbers once I uncover it.

Good thing I wasn't on the bay when I read that my boat didn't exist, right to the bottom.

As to performance, with the 150 on flat water with 1/2 tank I can squeak into the 40mph area.

It's a great boat, were I to repower it would be with a 175 or 200

Perry...you have mail.

Prxmid...what motor do you have on yours...150 Optimax? And what prop? I found that raising the motor one hole and go to a smaller (17 pitch) prop made all the difference. As a matter of fact, I am thinking about going down to a 16 pitch (PowerTech) prop so that I can get to 6000 RPM. At WOT, I am currently turning 5800 RPM and 43-44 mph on flat water with 2/3 tank of gas.

Tom,

Thanks for the numbers. I have added your Outrage to the list.

Those newer style Outrage 18' sure are beefy. Looks like it would handle just about anything.

Thanks for adding my boat to the Outrage listing Joe! I feel official now..no longer in limbo. It really is a great boat...totally different in character from the Classic Outrage 18, but very seaworthy. It has a lot of "big boat" features in a very trailerable size.

Tom lucky dog, my in-laws in in spring lake off M104 on 152ave. I dream of one day moving from royal oak to that area. Hope to see you around on the water this summer to get an up close look at the boat.
Cheers

Tom,

I had the smaller sister to your 18, the Outrage 17 II. I know what you mean about the big boat features. I liked the stern quarter seats and the huge, in deck, fish well. Plus the boat felt like a much larger boat than any 17 I have ever been on.

That new Honda BF150 looks just right on the transom too.

This is the second Whaler that I know of that is not listed in the respective year catalogs.

1. 1973 Montauk was not listed until the 1974 catalog but was verified that it existed by Chuck Bennett.

2. 1999 Outrage 18 was not listed in the 1999 catalog but obviously was made in 1999 as a 1999 model according to the HIN numbers you listed.

Thanks again.
