What engines are good candidates for the 15-inch transom on a 1967 SPORT13? Or easy, inexpensive solutions to use a 20". It seems that 40-HP engines with 15-inch shafts are hard to find. Boat is in pretty nice original condition and I dont want to mess it up much. |

Take a look at this article in the Reference section of this forum. At the very end of the article, it explains how an aftermarket bracket can be used to put a 20 inch shaft outboard on a transom designed for a 15 inch. The final few paragraphs are the part that pertain to your particular situation. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/engineBrackets.html |

I repowered a 72 sport after a year long restoration with a 40 Merc. The only one they made at the time (02) in 15" with remote and elec was a 3 cylinder weighing 200 lbs. Big mistake. I have about 6 inches of freeboard in the stern. The boat is fine with 2 or more people up front, but you really need to be careful with one. It is also to fast for me. If I had to do it over, I would take the suggestion above and use a bracket, or build up the transom and stick with a lower weight outboard. The 35 Johnson that came off weighted about 125. |
