From the Whaler literature 35hp is the minimum a 17' hull needs to plan with a light lane...also the 1973 hull is lighter than the newer hulls...which will also help...

As for how fast...I don't think it's going to be a speed burner but it might be OK for now...

Good luck and for more information, look at:

I have a 1971 16'7" also. It came with a 40hp Mariner on it and planes easily. Like Dave said, no speed demon but it should be fine for the kids. Soon after I got the boat I came across a 50hp for free so I swapped the engines. She cruises at 20knts at 3800 rpms and tops out at 30.
Would love to throw a 90 on it some day!

DSW39: I see you are from Kingston Ontario and I assume you intend to have the kids use the boat in Canada.

As you may know, the licence regime in Canada for driving power boats restricts horse power based on age. All children must pass their power boat licence exam. Once that is done Children 12 10 15 may only drive boats with 40 hp or less. Children 9 to 11 may only drive 9.9 or less.

Therefore, if the intent is to have these kids drive this boat and you can get a 35 hp cheap go for it, otherwise get a 40 hp until the 14 year old is 16 and then boost it to the 90 hp many of us run on those hulls.

For those who are interested this link is to an FAQ page on the Canadian boat licence requirments.
