Mercury's new 30-HP EFI four-stroke seems to be the only "clean" outboard on the market suitable for re-powering a classic 13-foot Boston Whaler: http://www.mercurymarine.com/30_efi2 What is particularly attractive is its light weight of 172-pounds, which is probably around the maximum weight a 13 can handle without compromises in the boat's balance, handling, performance, transom structural integrity, etc. Most other four-stokes and direct-injection two-stokes weigh over 200-pounds for their respective models--way too heavy, in my opinion. |

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It looks like a very nice motor for re-powering older Boston Whaler boats. |

Advertised weights are for the lightest configuration if not otherwise specified. The 172 lbs is probably for the 15 inch rope start version without oil in the crankcase or gear lube in the gearcase. My guess is that fully functional electric start, 20 inch shaft length (what you really want for a classic 13)version of the 4-stroke 30 will be in the 185 lb range. Still pretty heavy for the transom of a classic 13 and its only a 30 HP motor. |

The 30 and 40 HP 3 cylinder 4-stroke EFI's have been on the market since 2003. They show the weight of the 15" model as 216#. |

From Mercury's website: "Our completely redesigned 30 hp model is 47 pounds lighter, while our 25 hp has been reduced by 18 pounds but has increased torque. The reduced weight improves boat balance, handling, and performance and makes it more economical to operate overall." |

I believe this 30-HP four-stroke (747 cc) we are talking about is a new version of the new 25-HP four-stroke shown at Miami in February, 2005. The weight data for the Mercury engine is very incomplete. The motor is available with and without electric starting and with and without a tiller. It is very likely that a motor with both of those options will weight more than the listed weight dry weight of 172 pounds. Also, the listed weigh appears to be for a model without power trim and tilt, another option To get the true weight of the 30-HP Mercury four-stroke you will have to add the weights of: --crankcase oil and lower unit lubricants For comparison the 40-HP E-TEC (863 cc) with all of that stuff weighs 240-pounds. |
