I have recently bought a 1987 22' Revenge Walk Thru that is powered by a 1993 200HP Yamaha. My plans are to take that motor off and replace it with a 1998 225HP Johnson with a 25" shaft. I am going to build the transom up level across the back and install a bracket to hang the 225 from. Has anyone done this and are there any problems that would be associated with this project?

It is believed that when Boston Whaler produced any of the full transom models of the 22-foot hull (and others), such as a Whaler Drive model, a Sea Drive model, or a Sea Drive Blank model, that they did just what you planning. They initially had a boat molded with a notched transom, which was then re-worked to be a full transom.

I do not have any of the details of how this was done. I do have a 22-foot hull with a Whaler Drive and you can see on the inboard side of the transom that the gelcoat and lay up was not done in the mold like the rest of the boat.

At least a couple of people have built up the transoms on a notched transom model and added a bracket. Two such boats are shown in the CETACEA section. Let me see if I can locate the pages for you....

Once you have built up the transom you can get all kinds of advice about brackets from

Engine Brackets

and many other articles in the archives that touch on this subject. You are welcome to search them out and read them.

LHG and I were discussing this topic--a favorite of ours--not long ago and he made a very cogent observation: it is easier to do the conversion to full transom on a 25-foot hull because at the stern of a 25 there are already decks or gunwales which come inboard toward the centerline of the boat. On a 22-foot hull the gunwale just runs straight to the transom. On a 25 the gunwale curves inboard several inches. This helps define where the new full transom deck cover will be located on a 25-foot hull. Look at the CETACEA article about the OUTRAGE 25 CUDDY to see how the 25-foot stern lends itself to this.

A 22', 25' or 27' converted from a notched transom/Sea Drive to a full transom and using a 26"-30" setback transom bracket (such as Armstrong) should be set up to use 25" twins or a 30" single. This is needed to keep the powerhead dry. All of the new 22 and 25 Guardians are now being built with a 30" transom.

Thanks for the help guys. The motor I am installing is a 30" shaft and the bracket is a 30" set back. The pictures showing the 25' full transom sure looks good too. It has given me some ideas for a rear seat in mine when I have the transom raised. It is nice to know there is a place where I can go to get good information on my project. I have been talking to a friend of mine with a 25 outrage that is considering raising his transom as well. Thanks again.

If you possibly can, please take some pictures of the process of building up the transom. If you are doing the work yourself, maybe you can get a photo-assistant to take the pictures. If someone else is going the work, try to attend and take some photos. Many people would be interested in seeing this done.

Donaldwlee,

LHG has pointed out that my converted notched transom 25' Outrage Cuddy lacks the factory scuppers that his EOM full transom 25' Outrage has installed.

This should be a concern when you take on your project. Although it takes heavy sea conditons to allow water over my transom, it would be nice to have the scuppers and not just bilge pumps.

So far, you have come to the best place for information on Classic Whalers and found two of the best resources already responding to your posts.

Please keep us updated with your progress and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Andy

Sorry, that should be "OEM" not "EOM".
