I am wondering how fast I should expect an [OUTRAGE 18] to move powered by a 150-HP Mercury. We were scooting along at about 24 knots (GPS) at 4,800 to 5,150 RPM. While the boat was moving fast--felt faster than the GPS stated--24 knosts seems to be slower than I'd expect. I don't know what prop I've got, though there's a #14 on the back of the lower unit. The motor runs great. Thanks, Ian

It's going to depend on the year and condition of your motor, if you have bottom paint, what prop you're running and if you have canvas up.With full canvas, radar arch and 21" Merc Laser II propeller, I'm running my 150 Mercury Black max (1986) at about 5500 RPM and 47 MPH on GPS. My compression is pretty even at 120 PSI on all cylinders. I have no bottom paint, and that is on a still evening in fresh water.... A newer motor that is prop rated for 150 HP, UNLIKE mine - should push you into the 50 MPH range..... |

It all depends on weight.Using the speed prediction formula, and solving for weight: MPH = SQRT (HP/LBS) X 180 thus LBS = HP / (MPH/180)^2 If MPH=50 and HP=150, then LBS = 150 / (50/180)^2 LBS = 150 / 0.277^2 LBS = 150 / 0.077 LBS = 1944 As long as the OUTRAGE 18 weighs less than 1,944 LBS you will hit 50-MPH with a 150-HP motor. |
