Is it possible for my Yamaha brand 150-HP to run, but poorly, like barely get up on a plane, if I did not squeeze the [fuel primer bulb] prior to starting the engine? When I was motoring out it was running really roughly. It was shaking a lot, which is something that never happened before. I hope the poor performance is something this simple. Thanks Robb

Nope, your right, it's not going to be that simple, it's called wishfull thinking.
I'm afraid it's more than just not sqeezing the primer ball.

But, if it is running poorly, and squeezing the bulb while underway makes it run better, it is possible the bulb is the problem. That scenario is likley a fuel restriction problem and the bulb is one of many possibilities that could cause that. BillS

I do not believe it is possible for a Yamaha motor to run poorly.

Yes Jim, they do run bad on occasion....[ How much did they pay you to post that ? ]
Bill, he didn't say it ran better after sqeezing the bulb,......I know what your saying though.

He didn't say it ran better when he squeezed the bulb.
He said he didn't squeeze it before start.

When I said I did not think it was possible for a Yamaha motor to run poorly, I was just repeating what the salesmen told me after I asked him about getting service and parts for my Yamaha. He said they never break or need service, and that was why they did not have any parts in stock and why they didn't have any qualified service people for them.

He wouldn't happen to sell Whalers and Grady Whites, would he?

I am just trying to connect the dots. What I do see is:

--Yamaha motors tend to be very reliable
--Yamaha dealers/sellers never have any parts in stock
--Yamaha mechanics are hard to find

The engine needs to go in for service. Hopefully, they are not too backed up.

Hmmmm...not quite ready for prime time, guys. Keep your day jobs, Jim & Larry.

Just scheduled my 500 hour dealership maintenance 'tune-up' on my 2004 Yamaha 115 hp EFI four stroke. I'm running a little late--the motor's got 530 hours as of yesterday, and that's since it was purchased new in March of last year. It's never failed to start on the first turn of the key, and I've had absolutely NO problems whatsoever with it.

So mock on, you Mercury die-hards, you two-smokers of all persuasions, you E-TEC new-fanglers, you Yami reputation-manglers...my gray beauty and I will just keep putting along, killing the occasional salmon and enjoying the quiet, fuel efficient, smokeless ride together...I think I'm in love.

Tony, it sounds like your timing gear slipped a notch or 2.
Please tell me your not sleeping with that grey thing [ sure sounds like it.
Hell, if you fool around long enough, maybe you will have a bunch of 4 stroke hybrid kickers.
I thought you prefered brunetts.
Your buddy.

I think I would if I could only figure out how, Sal.

And you should talk, old bud, about slipping timing chains. As I remember you used to zip around San Francisco Bay in a motorboat going 200 mph ('Tis true, you newer CW members who haven't heard some of the tales...and he's implying that I'm a bit tetched just because I've got the hots for a hunk of metal. Hell, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where an infatuation such as mine doesn't even begin to raise eyebrows.

By the way, it's now 540 hours, and not a salmon to show for my trouble today ;-(

Tony
