I have a '80's 13 which I bought in the spring for the 14 year old. Max hp kids can have until they are 16 in NJ is 10. So it has a 9.9 on it now... Surprisingly peppy. The boat came with a C40 Yam that is in decent shape, but not real nice, has pull & elect start and power tilt. I have an opportunity to buy a '01 Johnson 25 in mint mint shape for $750. I don't like the weight of the 40, the boat lives in the water. I like the way it rests with the 9.9 on it, pull the plug and it gets 2-3" water in it. I thought I'd just go buy a new 25 or 40 next year.. Look at the motor mfg websites for a 2 stroke 25 or 40... There are only one or two to pick from. No 40 Yam or John-rude.. I don't think the boat needs 40hp, I think 25 is ample and is 100+lbs lighter... Think I should I jump on this and sell the 40?

With my kids, we went with with the OMC 25 and 35 hp engines 1980 and up. Plenty fast for skiing etc. and could sit on the intracoastal year round with the plug out esp. if you go pull start (no battery weight). Good luck, Bill
