Need of some ideas. We own 17’ classic Outrage and looking to re-power with a new 115 E-TEC this winter. What would you recommend for a prop size on this boat for an all around top performance?

Thanks Bob

What motor/prop do you have on it now? What's the top speed with what you have?

Hello Peter, Currently we have a 1992 115hp Evenrude & I do not know what the prop is. It looks like a small ss viper. WOT is about 38 mph @ 5500 RPM.

You should be able to use the propeller you currently use. Gear ratio on the E-TEC 115 is the same as it is on the 1992 115 (2:1) and so is the top WOT RPM (5500 RPM).

Hi Bob,

I'm surprised that you only get 38 mph at WOT with your 115. As we discussed before, I get just over 41 mph with my '04 Merc 90 4 stroke. I would think your boat should go faster then that. Maybe your 115 isn't working to it's full potential? All the older 90 degree OMC V4s I've ever used were pretty powerful motors for their size. Anyway, maybe someone here has an explanation why my 90 can outrun your 115 on the same boat if your 115 is in good condition....

My 1992 17 Outrage would run a solid 40MPH (GPS) @5,500 rpms with an Evinrude 100XP (same vintage as the boat). I would think that a 115 should push an Outrage 17 at least into the low 40's.

Is the bottom painted? How high is the engine mounted?

My Mistake,

I'm still thinking in Kts. Our 1993 17 Outrage will run a solid 38Kts (GPS) @5,400 rpms with our older 1992 Evinrude.

So our boat will Run 43.72962 MPH @ WOT...........That’s with the top up.

Very fun ride when it's choppy.

I Love to find a new Montauk/searay and pass them keeping the boat in control through rough swells or chop.

That sounds a lot better Bob. 3-4 mph faster then my 90 hp sounds about right to me :) Also, my speed was measured with the sun top down.
