My Merc outboard has run great all summer, now there's one issue that came up this evening.

It starts and runs great, and I cruised with a boatload of people yesterday evening at mid-range RPM successfully. Then, at WOT, the ignition cut out and the motor suddenly died. I restarted it easily, and it continues to run great until I get to almost max throttle, when it dies again (same result if I hit it from a standstill).

When it happened, I noticed the fuel gauge (electrical) drop to emtpy (like when the boat is turned off), so I'm certain it's electrical vs.fuel.

Any thoughts or experiences with this? Thanks in advance...

I'd check your fuel hose from tank to engine block for air leaks. Other than the fuel gauge action - which may or may not be related - this acts just like having an air like in your fuel line.

It might help if you mention what year and model Mercury you are referring to. 90 HP? EFI? What Whaler model is this Mercury mounted on?

Since you think it's electrical and NOT fuel, my experience of years ago might be similar. It was part of the kill switch circuit shorting out by touching a ground when it was put to WOT. Otherwise it wasn't touching and ran fine.

BTW, it was a B--ch to isolate, but not to fix.

A mechanic friend found it by checking the ignition switch wires and circuit for a short with a resistance meter with the engine not running but moving the throttle. It was an old Merc in line 6.

Hope that helps. It was frustrating for me.
