What is the performance (good or bad) of model-year 1999 four-stroke engines [manufactured by Suzuki and re-badged as] EVINRUDE? I am thinking about re-powering a Boston Whaler CENTER CONSOLE 15. [I anticipate a boat speed of] 35 to 37-MPH. [Due to the] fuel injection [I anticipate] great [fuel economy]. Let me know. Thank

We have a 1998 Evinrude four-stroke 70-HP that I think was made by Suzuki on our 1983 SPORT 15. It is used 100% salt water, and used pretty hard. The only repair done was the power lift/trim had to be replaced once, kind of expensive I thought. We do an annual oil change, winterization and had the water pump checked out last year. The motor starts and runs perfectly. The only problem with it is that it is so gosh darned huge and heavy. I have a bag of rocks in the bow storage compartment. You have to trim down to get up on plane to avoid playing sky pilot. Once you are cruising, everything is great. Lots of power and speed. I do not know the fuel economy or the WOT speed, but she will chine walk. It is when you go off plane that you wallow around with all the weight on the stern. It looks like a tournament bass boat when it is on the trailer. John

I had the DF70 on my 15 but took it off because it weighed too much. Just didn't sit right in the water. Got 10-MPG at cruising speed, though.

OMC/Bombardier sold re-badged Suzuki four-stroke engines for several years. The Suzuki engines are generally well regarded. I don't know anything specific about the 1999 model year.

Four-stroke engines in general get about 30 to 40-percent better fuel economy than a comparable two-stroke at their rated horsepower. At idle speeds a four-stroke will generally have significantly better fuel economy, so if your boating includes a high proportion of idle or low speed operation you will see a significant improvement in fuel economy with a four-stroke motor. Fuel-injection is not particularly indicative of superior fuel economy, but rather tends to make the engine easier to start and avoids problems with gum and varnish that often occur in carburetors where the fuel system is open to the air and evaporation is likely in lay-up.

A 1999 motor is hard to assess. It is a six year old motor, and a lot can happen to an engine in six years. Four-stroke engines require frequent lubricating oil changes to maintain them.

As mentioned, weight of four-stroke engines makes them hard to re-fit onto classic Boston Whaler boat hulls which were designed for much lighter motors.

You make no mention of the horsepower of the motor. This will be the most significant factor in determining the speed of the boat.

238lbs is about all you will want on the stern of that fifteen-the 70hp suzirude is @ 100lbs heavier (over 300lbs)and is too much weight. I have a merc 4s 60hp that weighs about 240lbs with oil. This 60hp motor is fuel injected. I have seen used 4s 60's for @3900 and they have been out for several years. I do not think the mercury 'bigfoot' lower unit is needed on the classic 15ft. I think the 50hp would be fine.

Great engine for that boat and you will swear that gas fairies are putting gas in your tank overnight cause she does not burn squat.

I would just like to add that I have 2 15' 1978 Whalers.
One has a 2000 50hp Honda 4stroke and the other has an early to mid 90's 3cly oil injected 2stroke 70hp Yamaha. Both sit fine in the water. Maybe 1-2 inches at the stern/side waterline. And the one with the 70 Yamaha is *Definitly* *seriously* waterlogged.
Both boats fly....the Honda is Extreeeemly fast....I've always meant to take out a GPS to clock my speed. If I splash her again this winter I'll report my speed. Otherwise I'll definitly post my report next spring.

Cheers,
MegaWhaler
