I'm looking to repower a '89 montauk... saw a deal on a Yammie 4 stroke but it's a 25" shaft. I've heard that one could repower with an extra long shaft with a jackplate. I was wondering if you guys had experience with a similar deal and what some cautions might be.

Thanks.

Better be a darn good deal for me to do that. Main reason is it puts a LOT of stress on the top of the transom and it looks stupid. Resale value will also suffer so make sure it is a deal you CAN'T refuse.

I have heard this question before, but has anyone actually accomplished it?Nick's right, that amount of stress is a little scary.

You'd be bending your steering cable at a fairly significant angle when you jacked that motor up to run fast.

It seems to me that it might be one of those things that no matter how good of a deal it seems like right now, in a year or so, you might wish you had just gone ahead and paid more for a motor that fit the boat.
