I am repowering a 19’8” Outrage with a used EFI 2 stroke motor. I am looking at motors from 150 to 225 hp. If I plan on mostly cruising at around 25 knts how will the fuel economy be with the 150 verses a 200 or 225 hp motor. A dealer told me I would be better off with more hp since the larger motor will turn a larger prop at lower rpms and get better fuel economy. Is this correct, or is there a fuel penalty at cruise for the bigger motor?

I'm not an expert...but I play one on TV...I've always wanted to say that! To get to your question, most people recommend powering with the greatest HP you can afford (but keeping it at or below the listed HP...) From what others have said and I tend to agree with their thinking, the higher HP engine will work less to push the boat at the same speed then the same boat lightly powered...the lightly powered boat will run at higher RPMs, using more fuel, to push the boat at that same speed...throw into the equation the fact the ligher HP is working much harder means there'll be more wear and tear on the engine...in turn, reducing that "fuel penalty" substantially...

There's plenty of other info on repowering in the reference section...it's a good read...

Good luck...

What years were 19-foot 8-inch hulls made?

jimh, The boat was called a 19 Outrage in 1996, a 20 Outrage in 1997 & 1998 and is currently in production as the 19 Justice. I am trying to repower my Outrage and my primary question in the Post Classic Whalers section was on motor recommendations. My question here is on fuel economy verses various hp motors. I am new at this, and I hope this clears up any confusion.

It's my opinion that since it takes "x" amount of horsepower to make a 19/20 Outrage go 25 knots, it doesn't matter what the maximum horsepower the motor is capable of producing. Let's assume it takes 100hp to make the 19/20 go 25 knots. Then it doesn't matter if you have a 200 or a 150 it's still only consuming enough fuel to make 25 knots. Now of course a 200 running full throttle will consume more fuel than a 150. All of this is assuming you are comparing engines of similar displacement. For instance a 2.5L Mercury 150/200. A 3.0L Mercury 225 will probably consume more fuel than a 2.5L engine at 25 Knots.

The problem with all of this is that it requires discipline to run at 25 Knots when you have a 200, versus a 150. You'll end up burning more fuel with the 200 because the opportunity to use more fuel is always there. If you buy that 150 you’re forced to "conserve" fuel.

Disclaimer: I've never even operated boat before, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express.

phathwaler out.
