I have a 30hp Evinrude 1986. The plug in the number 2 cylinder shows signs of water. Any ideas as to cause?

Head Gasket Leak?

I'd take it to your mechanic immediately (before you run the engine again).

Most likely a head gasket as Dave suggested. Throw a new gasket on, check the head for flatness, and then do a leak down test once its back together

Check head for flatness BEFORE installing new head gasket.
(It's kinda hard afterwards). And check the block for
flatness also.

Don't delay - that water is causing corrosion in places you
really don't want corrosion.

I just went through the same thing with an 1985 Evinrude 30 hp. After scuba diving it was hard to start and I ended up returning 2 miles to the dock running on one cylinder. The next day I was leaving on a trip so I didnt have a chance to look at anything. When I returned the powerhead was frozen-the head gasket had failed. I ended up buying a rebuilt powerhead for about $1100.

If the head is not flat,try hand lapping it with cloth backed sandpaper on a flat surface like the top of a table saw or a thick piece of glass.

Might want to check compression before t/d. If compression is good, could have a cracked or porous block.

Tash - If this is a salt water engine; you may have a corrossion/electrolisys? issue where the aluminum in the water jacket and the top of the liner meet. Repaired by welding and resleeving. Interesting, have only seen this problem on this model OMC.
