Are the front and side railings often removed from a c.1985 SPORT 13? I am thinking of taking them off to gain some more room to move around. The rails seem to limit the space inside the boat. [The author solicits comments about removal of the railings.]

Steve, give it a whirl. Save the parts and seal the holes with something temporary like 3M 4200. If you don't like the boat with out the rails, you can always put them back on. Then again, if it works for you, then you can sell the rails.

Removing the railings will have little effect on the boat's performance. They may contribute a slight amount of weight and wind resistance, however I do not expect you will see any difference in the boat's performance without them.

Removing the rails will not have a effect on performance but will have a profound effect on people falling overboard especially in the small 13.
The only time I have seen any remove the rails is if they were using the boat as a dive boat for ease of entry and exit to the water.
Also with the rails removed there is nothing to hold onto when the going gets rough...better have one of those PFD,S that inflate when you hit the water.

Steve,
The railings are easy to take off, most likely using just a phillips screwdriver. My 15' had side railings and I hated them, I am much happier with them off the boat. If you (or your passengers)really need something to hang on to then get a short piece of rope and loop it to the norman pin in the bow. Usually I have my wife and one daughter in the bow of my boat when I am popping up on plane and a short piece of rope is all they need to hang onto, try it.

Its YOUR boat, do what you want to her!

Steve; Had 13 with 40 merc, favorite pastime jumping it out of the water... ( younger then) no rails, never lost anyone, but did break the seat! The 15 had side rails, thought they were "in the way" so I cut them down 3 inches in height. worked out well. just another option.

Thanks Guys, I think I will take them off and see how she looks. Then make my decision as to put them back on or not.
