Hi, all. I have just laid my hands on a Yamaha C90 two-stroke pre-mix type motor, sometimes referred to as the commercial model. I just wanted to know if anyone had an opinion on choosing the one or the other model, premix or Precision Blend oil injection? And, is it possible to convert a premix to Precision Blend oil injection? Thanks for any input. --Ted

Ted, I would keep it like it is, but I like things really simple and I am use to the older engines, such as my 1975 85 hp Johnson and I use 2- 6 gallon cans. I always said if my 85 dies on my Currituck, I would replace it with a Yammy C90, well they are discontinued now, that is a shame :-( Good luck in your changeover!! Jack.

Thanks for your input. Well, I did some more searching on the subject of oil injection, and found enough evidence of people having trouble with this to motivate me to leave things as they are (mostly on outboardrepair.com). Although it does seem these systems are very reliable on Yahamas, and then again - all it takes is one failure and you're toast.

I would purchase the model of engine you want. While there is often speculation about how a particular engine can be converted after purchase into a more expensive model by the owner through the addition of new components, my feeling is that approach in general is hopelessly flawed. If you want an engine with oil-fuel mixing, buy the Precision Blend model of the Yamaha. If you don't want that feature, buy the engine without it.

After browsing around on the issue of oil injection, I think I'll go with the idea of having as few things as possible that can go wrong. I can take the trouble of mixing myself and then I know that at least that part won't go wrong...thanks for your input, guys. /Ted

Premixing fuel is not a big deal on a Montauk or a Sport model where the tanks are separate and easy to mix. On a boat with a built in tank like an Outrage I would definitely want the oil injection.

I have Precision Blend and carry a quart of two stroke on board just in case.
