Hi everyone,

We are expecting [temperatures in the] 60's this weekend and my 170 MONTAUK has been winterized. Yet I am dying to get her out on the water.

What happens if I take her out, and then in a week it gets really cold again? Are there any bad things that can happen? I figure I'll be using [the boat by the] end of March, anyway. That is when I put her in last year. I trailer her. I am not sure if that matters. Any help [in answering the question regarding regarding the need to re-winterize the boat after using in will probably be appreciated by the author].

You will be fine. Just make sure after you use it that the engine is trimmed all the way down when stored, and you take the hull plug out to drain any water in the boat.

If the engine was fogged, you may want to throw a new set of spark plugs in it before running. The fogging process can foul spark plugs pretty good.

I am supposed to drop my boat off next week for the spring service. I may just dump it in this weekend too if I get the work done I need to.

It is too bad you don't have a Bombardier/Evinrude E-TEC motor. You could put the motor back in service whenever you felt like, and then you could re-winterize the motor when you hauled the boat on the trailer. Winterization with an E-TEC is just a few moments of running the engine, while the Engine Management Module (EMM) makes all the adjustments. I think this is one of the coolest features of the E-TEC. It would be the perfect answer to the situation you find yourself in.

We have had such a (comparatively) mild winter here in Michigan there have been several days when I thought of re-commissioning the boat. Unfortunately, it would be a pain to re-winterize the engine, so I did not follow my heart.

Now that we are closer to Spring boating season, I don't see much harm in using the boat and then letting it sit for several weeks until the next use. No need to completely re-winterize the engine in that situation.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I just might take her out this weekend.

Not much fishing that can be done due to flounder season not here yet but just to be out on the water is enough.

Thanks again,

Alan
