I've seen a pair of 90 hp mercs for sale for what seems a
reasonable price. However, one of the engines compression
numbers are: 140, 140 and 100. Owner says they run fine.
Without taking them to a mechanic, is the thought that this engine is on it's last leg and will take a chunk of money to fix it or could it be fine? Any advice would be
appreciated.

Read my article:

Assessing Used Outboard Motors

It has specific advice on compression checks.

Matt...she has a problem, or should I say HAD. That engine could run 10 years or 10 minutes with a low cylinder. If it was my personal engine I would run it to death. If I was looking to buy...pass.

I agree
An engine with 100psi on one cylinder would run just like one with even compression. Contrary to what some believe you cant tell the difference by ear.

That cylinder may be at 100psi still in 20 years, but why take the chance?
