This web site has been so helpful with making the decision to choose a 2006 90 E-Tec to repower my 1967 Dell Quay Dory 17.Thank you ratherwhalering, and all the rest, for sharing the technical information that convinced me this motor would be well suited for my boat, as my boat is very similar to the old Montauk 17.

I ran the engine yesterday for about four hours. Preformed great on the water. When I inspected the engine at home, I found very fine metal sludge on the upper gear case vent magnet. The lower drain plug magnet was clean. Has any of you experianced this with your new E-TEC? Is this a "wear in" that will end shortly? I also noticed some missing occasionally while accellerating slowly from idle to mid-range throttle. From 3,000 RPM and above, and at idle, very smooth. Thanks in adance for your obervations and expertise.

Those metal whiskers are normal in any gearcase. You will always find some on the magnet, even on a well used gearcase.

Since your engine is new, its probably still in the break-in oiling period (I believe 10 cumulative operating hours above a certain RPM, 2000 or 2500). It's running characteristics are likely to change a bit once out of the break-in oiling period. Even after the break-in period is over, there may be some spot in the lower part of the operating range where its not as smooth, possibly perceived as missing, because its switching from a stratified to a homogeneous operating mode.

Hey, congratulations on your new engine! I am still in the honeymoon stage with mine, and it has been almost two years. I totally agree with Peter that the initial 10 hours can produce some vibrations, but after that period, it should settle right in and run great. You may also want to try a stainless steel propeller, as this seemed to eliminate the transition vibrations on my rig. Don't worry if in the first 10 hours you see some smoke on start-up, this is a result of the "break-in" extra oiling procedure, and is normal. I'd switch to XD-100 oil once you have 15-20 hours on her, just because it uses so little oil when your dealer sets it to this mode.
