I've got a 150 Montauk with a 60-HP Mercury and I'd like to put on a 4- or 5-HP Mercury four-stroke auxiliary motor. This kicker would be mounted on the starboard transom side with the aid of a custom made motor bracket. The weight of the motor is 50-lbs. Is this extra weight off the stern going to create noticeable performance problems in terms of the way my whaler handles it? Thanks, Pete

I doubt it will affect performance except to the extent that you'll be adding some weight to the overall. Your static trim my be affected, but you can simulate that before you buy if you think it will be a problem. I think you'll be fine, although I'm not sure exactly how much a kicker that size weighs.Roy |

Roy thanks...thought I was going to drop off the board there. I called and talked to a Boston Whaler customer service rep who was very helpful. He said the extra weight, about 55 lbs, won't present any problems while under way but you might notice a bit of a list to the stern when anchored. He said the 150 Montauk has no reinforcement on the starboard side of the transom so any auxiliary motor bracket installed on this side would have to be bolted to the center transom and extended over. Maybe this is why the dealer wants to charge $550.00 for the custom auxiliary bracket. I'd mount it on the port side, which is reinforced, but I've already got a swim ladder mounted there. Once again thks for your response. Pete

Hey Pete,I have a 1983 Montauk with a 90hp Merc main engine and a 4hp Merc Kicker. Both 2 cycle. The kicker is mounted on the stbd side clamped directly onto the transom. I just bought and mounted the kicker this year. I been using the boat for the past month and have found no difference in trim or handling underway. I have to tilt the kicker up when running on plane because the lower unit kicks up a lot of water and gets spray all over the cowling of the 90hp main. The 4hp is probably smaller than what most people recommend but here on the Great Lakes there is not any tide or current to speak of. The 4hp seems to be doing the trick. |

The Mercury 5-HP four-stroke weighs 55-lbs. A custom bracket to support it will probably weigh at least 5-lbs. By mounting this weight on the starboard side you will affect the boat's lateral trim as well as its fore and aft trim. The boat will list to starboard and trim down by the stern. You can judge how much change in the boat's trim will occur by temporarily placing a weight of 60-lbs in the approximate position of the auxiliary motor. The 150 MONTAUK has a maximum engine weight rating of 305-lbs. You should consider the combined weight of your current engine and the new engine, and evaluate them with regard to this weight limit. |
