I have a 20-foot boat. Which is for my boat [trailer] winch, a 25-foot nylon strap 2-inches wide or a 7/32-inch galvanized steel aircraft cable 25-feet long? Thank you.

Strap.

No problems with cable digging in on the winch drum.

No loose "threads" to cut and otherwise damage anything it touches.

Red sky at night. . .

On trailer winches, straps are more commonly used.

I changed from cable to strap. This was a major improvement, much easier to operate and the no cable to dig in the drum. The strap comes off very easy, quite, and is strong.

Did you ever find a small steel splinter in your cable as you walked back along the cable ,sliding your hand slowly to keep your balance ^@^,I now use a strap.

Yep, go with the strap.

I changed from cable to strap on both Whalers last year,
with some difficulty as one winch drum was not "holed"
to receive a shaft fixing the strap,
in order to prevent those throbbing little punctures.

Like everyone else said, go with a strap or good quality braided (not twisted)rope. The old shrimpers I grew up with call those steel splinters "meat hooks". Another good reason to avoid cables is if a cable parts it will snap back with tremendous force and injure you or your boat.

Go with a strap. I have a 3 inch scar on the back of my hand to show what a cable can do when it lashes back when it breaks. high sierra

I have an old '84 Cox trailer with a cable in my winch. Can you simply switch from cable to strap without buying a new winch?

Strap.

eportfolio, you should be able to change over have a cable to strap with no problem.

A strap also has an added safety feature in that it breaks by tearing and not snapping in two like a cable or rope.
