I need the forums help. I have a 2003 Johnson/Suzuki 90 hp. 4-stroke on my Montauk. The 4 blade composite prop that I currently run has a thin s.s. tab washer, looks like an external tooth lock washer, that meshes with the notches in the prop hub, between the prob and the brass castle nut and pin combination. I just received a Stiletto s.s. prob, thanks Rob, and Iam not sure what I need to use in the form of a washer when I swap out the prop. The Stiletto does not have any notches for the existing tab washer to work with.

You will probably use the same stuff. If washer is too thick to get cotter pin in, then use a thinner one. It does NOT have to have the splines, that is to justify the $40 cost of the kit. Remember that when underway the prop is PUSHING in towards the gearcase, not pulling on the nut. Washer is there to remove slack, that is all.

I run OMC and suzuki props on both my OMC & suzuki engines. They are interchangeable except they require thinner or thicker washers on the nut side only.

He doesn't have a cotter pin, he has a tab washer which grips
the prop and the nut. The new prop doesn't have the part that
the washer grips.

If you switch to a cotter pin, you'll also need a different
nut ("castelated (sp?)") with slots for the cotter pin.

Chuck, my current set-up terminates with a brass castle nut with a s.s. cotter pin. Directly behind that lies the "tab washer". It is very thin and the fingers bend down and grip the prop hub. I talked with a Johnson dealer today and he said I need to use an original O.E.M kit with the Stiletto which is different from what Iam currently using.

Gordon,

You need only use a the correct washer/spacer behind the prop and below the castle nut and cotter pin.

The tab washer you describe sounds like the Mercury tab washer which is used in lieu of a cotter pin only only works with the Mercury washer. What kind of composite prop do you have?

If you need a clean prop, just throw it in the dishwasher.
Maytag, Kenmore, GE, whatever. You don't need a Suzuki. ;-)

Tom, it is a Propulse, carried by West Marine. The outboard was set up with this when I bought it. No paperwork supplied so I wasnt sure what i was dealing with.

Gordon,

It sounds as if the previous owner had that prop set up to use either a Mercury tab washer or a cotter pin.

The only thing you will need (that is suspect you do not have now) if the aft brass spacer washer which fits the splines of the prop shaft and places the nut in the appropriate area of the prop shaft to fit the cotter pin.

Be sure your current thrust washer fits the forward face of the Stiletto hub.

Tom, I played it safe and ordered a prop nut kit through a Johnson dealer. The Stiletto prop had a notice in the box to use O.E.M hardware.
