I have 1999 Boston Whaler Outrage 21 with a 200-HP mercury EFI. I do a lot of offshore fishing and would feel much safer with a backup motor. Would a 9.9hp or 15hp kicker be to much stress on the transom or cause the boat to lean to one side? Would I need to get trim tabs also? Would that kicker be enough power to get me back to shore? I would appreciate if anyone with kicker motors on smaller boats could give me some feedback. Thanks

I have a 21 Walk Around and have a 6-HP on it for my kicker. It pushes me at about 5-MPH. It's gonna take me awhile from 50 miles out, but it will get me there.

The only problem I have is added weight on the transom. She sits lower in the back now.

What size outboard is your main power and does the boat lean to one side? I guess a 9.9 would be enough power then.

I added a Yamaha T8 to my Outrage 19 II. The kicker weighs over 100 lbs (because of power tilt/trim)and is attached to the transom by way of Stainless Bracket.
While it has slowed the time to reach plane and the top end speed, it has not been noticeable enough to make me regret it in any way. Just make sure to mount the engine so that it sits out of the water when underway with your main.
As for listing, my boat listed a tad to port naturally (for reasons I do not know) and the engine has evened it out a bit so it now lists just a very wee bit to starboard. You can always offset this later by moving gear and batteries to help even it out.
Kicker does have dual binnacle and key switches with remote steering.

Hope it helps.

I installed a 2005 Mercury 9.9 ProKicker on my 1997 21 Outrage last season.

It is mounted on the starboard side, right on the transom. The boat does have a slight list while at rest to starboard now, about 1 inch or so. Engine weight is a bit above 100lbs, it is a 4 stroke with power trim & tilt. Transom integrity is not a concern for me since this model 21 Outrage was built to accomodate twin engines.

I have not noticed a difference while running as far as a list from the weight, but I already have trim tabs, and use them frequently to level and adjust the the bow up/down attitude of the boat, but no more or less with the addition of the kicker.

It has pushed my hull a bit above 6 mph. I have not used it to run the boat in any kind of seas, but I would imagine it would be a long haul home against any kind of weather on just the kicker.

I do like the bit of security the kicker gives as auxilliary power, but I look at the kicker as something I can use to keep the boat moving into the waves and out of trouble waiting for sea tow to show up if I lost the main engine in any kind of weather. The main purpose of my kicker install was for low speed trolling, which I love it for.

I would recommend trim tabs irregardless of the kicker install, really helps to improve the ride in the sloppy stuff.

"regardless"

"irregardless" is not a word.

Sorry, "irregardless" is a word, regardless of its reputation or lack of formality:

Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

I have on my 1998 21 outrage ( like Rich's 97 outrage)

a merc 15 hp 4 stroke mounted on the starboard side of the

transom. It is 110 lbs , and does not effect the attitude

of the boat. It has a low pitch prop , and pushes the boat

to max 7 mph.

BTW I just made an offer on a 1967 13ft sport today as a project boat hope no one beats my offer because I cant afford anymore.

There are two good articles listed in the REFERENCE section on installation of auxiliary motors. They may provide some useful information for you.

See:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/yamahaT8Kicker.html

and

http://users.sisqtel.net/jkriz/Outrage/Kicker/

These are comprehensive and well-written articles. Don't miss them.

Sorry for my delay.. Just launched and have been at sea... Mine is mounted on the starboard side as well.. There isn't much list .. The only time I notice is the starboard fish well is filled with water when I first get to the boat.. other than that.. I don't notice it.. I now have a E-tec 200. The weight of that is now causing me worries as the stern is alot lower in the water now than with the oceanrunner..
