Recently I have changed the propeller on my 1998 OUTRAGE 21 to a 17-inch pitch MIRAGEplus from a 19-inch pitch BlackMax aluminum propeller. After the switch, I have noticed that at low engine speed and in gear there is a disturbing clincking noise. I changed back to the original prop and the noise disappeared. What can be the problem?

The heavier weight of a stainless steel propeller often results in there being quite a "clunk" when shifting in and out of gear. With Mercury propellers which use the FLO-TORQ plastic hub system, this tendency is often quite pronounced.

In addition to the "clunk" there can also be a distinct "rattle" or clicking caused by the extra weight of the propeller while the motor is in gear at idle speed. This is not uncommon nor indicative of anything terrible.

Try using the FloTorque III hub.....it was designed to reduce "clutch chatter" on 4 strokes....but I have found it to be very helpful with ALL stainless props. I now use the FloTorque III in all props that will accept the FloTorque hubs.
The part number for the kit is 835257Q9

For guidance on the rather complex designator used by Mercury to distinguish the various options in their FLO-TORQ series, see:
