[The author's boat is a 1994 Boston Whaler Outrage 21 with a] 1996 200-HP Evinrude and a 19-inch pitch propeller. [The engine speed] won't exceed 4,000-RPM [nor will the boat] go over 33-MPH.

[Would changing the propeller to a ] 17-inch pitch [produce] better [boat speed]?

A 17-inch pitch propeller will be better, but you want perfect, not just better.

What model of 19" pitch propeller do you have now? Brand? Number of blades? Material? Diameter? Part number?

Your motor redlines at 5,500 RPM I believe, so you have a lot of ground to make up with an improved propeller. Ceteris paribus, you would need to drop to a 13" pitch prop to come close to that. That does not sound right at all.

The boat in question is a 1994 OUTRAGE 21. The propeller is a 14-1/2" x 19" OMC SST which should be correct for that boat. Whaler performance data for that version of the Outrage 21 shows it should be capable of close to 50 MPH with 200 HP.

Something is terribly wrong with your Evinrude if it can only propel that boat to 33 MPH.

The engine does not appear to be running well.

My 1997 21 Outrage with a 1997 Mercury 225 turned a 19 pitch Laser II stainless propeller to around 5400 rpms, 46 miles per hour. I have a big hard top t-top on the boat, so I do think 50 miles per hour without it would be realistic.

I think those running this hull with 200 horsepower find a 17 pitch propeller to work best (depending on the propeller design), but I also agree that the 19 pitch propeller you are running is likely not the cause of your problems. Your not going to gain more than 1000 rpms and 15 miles per hour by dropping the pitch of the propeller 2 inches.

Definitely have the engine checked out, get it running right, run with the 19 pitch for a benchmark max rpms, then start playing with propellers.

Hi, I have a 22 OR, 1997 johnson and use a 15 inch SS BRP prop. So often smaller is better, less strain on the lower unit, engine, better acceleration, less midrange miss, and longer enginelife. Explain to me why so many want big props???

WHAT HP JOHNSON? 200 HP LIKE MINE?

Why do you write in all caps? It is quite annoying.

I have a 200 carbed engine, In about 3 weeks it will be replaced with a 2003 Ficht with more horsepower and I will still be running with a 15 inch SS prop.

What is the recommended operating range (rpms) of your motor MDA? You should prop the engine so it runs wide open throttle to manufacturer specifications.

Without knowing that it is hard to recommend a prop, but I would think you could turn the 17 pitch. Try it, your 19 pitch may have more like a 20 "effective pitch", or run big.

Tom i had 94 21 ft outrage with a 200 hp ocean runner that i spent a fortune on having the props reworked. my problem was the opposite, my prop would blow out and hit about 6200 rpm's. what finally worked best was a omc ss 14 1/2 or 14 3/4" with a 19 pitch and double cup. this combination would give me about 51 mph with 127 gals of fuel and 60 gals of freshwater, bait and ice. i tried a 20 and 21 pitch, save your money. the boat ran best at about 5600 to 5800 rpm's. what a awesome boat, owned it for 5 yrs till it fell victim to a divorce. i can only think of 2 additonal things that could be prop related that happenend to me. one was the prop that was stamped 19 had been converted to a 21 pitch, and two the internal rubber hub was slipping. When you fix it you will be very pleased.

Best of luck
Al
