There are a number of Whaler 27's coming on the market these days at decent prices. I have seen boats with twin 1996 Mercury 225 Offshore motors, and a boat with twin 1999 Mercury EFI motors. Which of these engines is better, considering longevity and reliability as the primary requirements. I would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on economy, as well as other factors related to these motors. Would there be any significant performance differences? How about mid-1990's 225 Evinrude Vindicators for this boat? Are these engines superior to the Mercury outboards when longevity and reliability are the key considerations? spider

The EFI Mercs are a little better in fuel economy at slow and mid range speeds than the carbed motors. They're also much easier to start, no primer to worry about. At high-mid to wide open, the economy is about the same. Both are good solid reliable motors. Pull the plugs and inspect them for any evidence of detonation (metal drops or deposits on the white ceramic insulator). If compression looks good, gearcase fluid looks good, then rebuild the poppit valves, change the water pumps, new fluid, and inspect Thermostats and you should be good to go. BillS |

If the price is good go for the 1999 Mercury EFI's, they are rock solid dependable and will troll well without loading up and fouling plugs. They will get slightly better economy than the carb models but not much, the main benefits are instant starting and clean running. |
