I'm considering a honda 20hp 4 stroke for my '67 whaler 13. Is it likely that this motor will get the boat up on a plane with 2 adults or two adults and a child, or is it not worth the effort? Thanks

I think 20hp won`t be enough to get up on plane with two adults, even with a low pitch prop. I would say 25hp should be the least amount of power to plane two adults and a child. I had two 13 footers with 25hps and it was adaquit, if not exiting. Check my survey in the GAM section, and you`ll find over 75 or so boats reporting, only one or two have 20 hp motors, Most have 40hp motors, which in my estimation "is over the top", but for top resale, you probably need to follow the crowd. |

It is VERY nice to have reserve power - you will run the guts out of a 25 - you can throttle back w/ 40 and run it easy. I could not imagine trying to take passengers w/ 25 unless you want to run it like a pontoon boat - slow, easy, motor still having to work hard. |

We used to ski with a 1963 13' with a Johnson 18. Dad and one in the boat plus the skier. Sometimes we'd have four in the boat while not skiing. It did it, but VERY poorly. We lasted 1/2 a season with the 18 and went to a 33 and that did it much better. If you get the 20, to get on a plane, you'll have to have passengers move all the way forward and when you get on a plane, move them aft. Go for more horsepower. JimP

Thanks everyone for the comments. You've convinced me. I'll be looking at something between 25-35 HP, depending on how much weight,(and money) is involved.Thanks. |
