I have a pair of 1996 Johnson Ocean Runners on [a 1996 21 Outrage]. Lots of small things going wrong--$250 to $1500 here and there). I am looking at repowering with twin 150hp Mercury Verados or Yamaha F150 4 Strokes or Honda F150 4-Strokes. Can the [1996 21 Outrage] handle twin Verado's? [Give me] recommendations regarding these [three brands of] engines for weight, price, performance and fuel efficiency? Recommendations would help. CR |

I recommend you obtain a copy of a recent POWERBOAT REPORT magazine test of 150-HP outboard motors which tested all of the engines you mention. This will give you comprehensive information about them. Also see these previous discussions about 150-HP engines: 150 HP comparision test report article Quietest 150-HP Ouboard I also wrote an article for the REFERENCE section which compares 150-HP engine specifications and gives some anecdotal price information. You may find it is interesting to read: Low-Emission 150-HP Outboard Price Comparison |

The 21 Justice is still sold by Brunswick Commercial and Government Products. They spec the max engine weight at 700 pounds. www.brunswickcgboats.com/pdfs/21JusticeSpec.pdf The twin Verados will be in excess of 1000 lbs. I would try to place a call to Boston Whaler/Brunswick Commercial and ask if they are rigging the 21 Justice with twins, and which engine they have used. Rich |

What size are your engines now? If they are 150's then you are already over weight being they weigh 375 each. There are no 4 stroke 150's that weigh less than 470 or so and even the e-tec 150 is like 429lbs. Your best bet would be twin 140 suzukis at 410lbs each or twin 130 e-tecs which weigh about the same as old 150's. |
