Hello all. Caution, I am a truck driver NOT a boat captain/mechanic. I bought my Whaler because I needed a simple (and cheap!) solution to getting on and off a island. Bought a 1961 (I think) 13-footer. Came with the original (I think) 1961 18-HP Johnson. Seems a little water logged, but not bad, I'll sort through that this winter.

I use the boat in the ocean often with 4 people and or a bunch of gear and feel I need a little more zing. I do not really want to raise the transom or such things. I plan to keep the 18-HP tucked away and when I'm retired and done with this ocean foolishness I will go back to the Johnson for quiet lake fishing.

Three Questions:

1) The specifications list the older boats as only rated for 20-HP and all the others for 40-HP. What is up with that?

I bought a used 40-HP Evinrude Big Twin. It is a monster compared to my 18. I am thinking one of those 25- to 30-HO motors might be a better choice. The whole power-to-weight ratio thing.

2) I was considering the Johnson 28 as I already have the manual and can work on them. Is that a decent motor?

3) In reality I need to stay on budget here so what is my best bet given limited funds?

Unless someone can convince me to stick with the 40-HP, I will put it in the classifieds and try to sell or trade it.

Thanks much,

john

Ahoy, John.

The 20hp/40hp thing is not an early vs. later rating. It is a tiller steer (20) vs. remote steer (40) rating.

You didn't say whether your 13 is a standard (tiller steer) or a Sport (remote steer).

If your boat is a standard the 40 would be too much weight and hard to manage from a tiller, but that is a good engine for a Sport that is carrying 4 people. I preferred a 25 for my Sport but rarely loaded it that much.

Whether Standard or Sport the Johnny 28 would be a good engine if managed with care on a Standard.

Hey thanks. Mine is a side console, which I think means SPORT. I think my 18 hp weighs in at about 85 lbs, the 40 evinrude with electric tips the scale at 165 lbs. Looking at a 35 Johnson twin, weighs about 125 lbs. That is what I know.

It looks like the 35 Johnson your looking at might be a good bet. The power to weight thing is important in a small boat such as your 13 foot Whaler. Mercury also made lightweight 35hp twins in the late 70`s through the mid 80`s, however finding short shaft motors is a little more difficult. It sounds like the 40 Johnson You have must be a `60`s model, (very heavy). In the early 80`s outboard hp ratings were changed from crankshaft to propshaft ratings.
