I have a 1982 Johnson 90 hp outboard with a bad powerhead. What series of year powerheads is compatable with my powerhead? A friend has a 1969 Evenrude 85 hp with very low hours he could supply me. Will this powerhead work on my engine? Thanks in advance for your help.

I think any of the 85/88/90/100/115 V4 powerheads should work, but make sure the ignition sytems and carbs can be swapped between years. |

Before you get into it...look at the base gaskets for both engines and make sure they are the same. These are the gaskets used to mount the head to the mid section. If they are not identical...no fit! |

Even if the base gasket was the same (which they are not), you'd have to use the powerhead intact with 1960's electronics and fuel systems. The mounting holes/locations are totally from 1969 to 1982 for the carbs, stator, timing base, powerpack, coils, diode, wire harness, shift linkage, control cables, etc- so you'd be stuck with all the old parts and their problems.Better off getting something much closer to your old block. And, a 37 year old engine may not have a lot more to give. |

Oops.... Meant to say: The mounting holes/locations are totally DIFFERENT from 1969 to 1982 for the carbs, stator, timing base, powerpack, coils, diode, wire harness, shift linkage, control cables, etc- so you'd be stuck with all the old parts and their 1960's problems. |

I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge on these engines with me. Your advice is well taken on obtaining a more recent engine to work with. If I can convince my wife, I will buy a new engine and be done with it.Thanks and have a good weekend, Mike |

These engine blocks are everywhere, no need to get a '69. I would not use your old carbs, a lean condition could be what killed your old engine
