Good evening everybody,Today I ran two new Turbo-Prop "OS-I" 17"-P 4 Blades as a comparisson against the previous design turbo 4-blade 17"-Pitch prop's ""Optima-4's"
28 B-W Outrage with Merc. 225 Opti's (2000 mod. yr.)
Fuel/Load as before: 1/2 tank and full water with 2 POB's
Water Conditions Same: Calm to Vy. Light Chop
Temp as Before: 85-90 deg. with Med. to High Humidity
RPM's and Speeds from BOTH Prop. designs as follows:
RPM's "OS-I" Speeds "Optima-4" Speeds Change
3150 20 MPH 13.5 MPH +6.5 MPH
3200 22.5 MPH 14.3 MPH +8.2 MPH
3300 24.5 MPH 16.5 MPH +8 MPH
3400 26 MPH 18 MPH +8 MPH
3500 27.2 MPH 22.3 MPH +5 MPH
3650 29.2 MPH 26.8 MPH +2.4 MPH
3750 31.2 MPH
3800 32.7 MPH 30.5 MPH +2.2 MPH
4000 34 MPH 32 MPH +2 MPH
4200 36.5 MPH 34 MPH +2.5 MPH
4400 38.5 MPH
4600 40 MPH 37 MPH +3 MPH
4800 42.5 MPH
5000 44 MPH 41.5 MPH +2.5 MPH
5450 (Max.) 47 MPH 46 MPH +1 MPG
Observations:
New OS-I's do not spin-up on the exhaust vents to build RPM's and then "hook-up" at about 3500 R's like the older designed Optima-4's did. The OS-I's maintain a "linear" acceleration with respect to the climbing RPM's. Results show a Completely New Usable Low-Speed Planing Range for the boat where before there was NONE! Yahoo!!!
New OS-I's support the stern much more at all RPM's which enables the hull to run "flatter" on the water. They do not, however, allow the hull to "air itself out" as much at higher speeds (which isn't as much fun). Still, I think for our hull designs this flatter attitude is a strong positive. When this hull is allowed to run slow ( in the high "Teens" & low 20's MPH) her bow WILL rise and in even a 2-3 ft sea with her bow high she takes the water in the "belly" which can produce some pounding. With the engines trimmed down I expect the new OS-I's to keep the stern UP and Bow Much Lower than before at lower speeds to take the seas in the bow entry area such that the ride should improve greatly at this low-speed slogging into a chop running attitude. Great news for those long-haul offshore runs.
Let's not forget the nice and consistent 2+ MPH Gain in the mid and higher cruise RPM ranges ACROSS THE BOARD! Upper to Top speeds I really don't care so much about, but these prop's come through with better results there too!
I would like the top R's to come up into the 5550-5600 range but I think they probably will when the summer heat and humidity go away and let these motors make some more horsepower.
I don't know about you, but if I can make 30+ MPH at about a LAZY 3700 RPM's all day and be burning something like 8.5 GPH per motor doing it...I'm A HAPPY FISHERMAN!
In Short...These Prop's are WINNERS!!!
Go with a pair of Turbo OS-I's for $200.00 or more SAVINGS over the Merc. 4-Blades for this heavy boat application and put the extra money "in the tank".
Tight Lines...Steve
