I just bought a 15 Sport and it came with a 19994 Johnson 70 hp. This is my first Johnson and just curious if this was a good year and motor for Johnson. Can anyone tell me about this motor? I have always had Yamaha. Thanks Ben

That 3 cylinder engine has been the back bone of OMC for many, many years. It's probable the most reliable one of the very best engines made by that company. Just make sure you give it a good de-carb treatment every 50 hours or so & use the XD50 Evinrude oil because it has more carbon detergents than the XD30. If you can keep the rpms down in the low 3000s you will get decent fuel economy for a 2 stroke, but once you get up over 4200 - 4500 rpms, she gets pretty thirsty. Sal |

That OMC motor was so good that Yamaha made an almost exact copy of it for their 70-HP. |

Yamaha got on the map by copying the OMC 50hp looper and calling it a 55hp. Still made today outside the US as an Enduro. Suzuki also copied OMC in a lot of ways but most of their engine blocks are original designs unlike Yamaha. I have owned 3 or so 70's and although they may sound somewhat like a diesel at low speeds, nail that throttle and you will pass the 70 Yamaha by a pretty big margin...lots-o-snot for a 70. |
