I bought a 24' pontoon boat for use at the lakehouse last summer and after 3 months of use need some prop advice. Please don't flame, my other boat is a Montauk and this forum gives very good answers regarding props and motors.

The motor is a 2001 Johnson 90 (WOT 4500-5500 rpms). The current prop is a 13.75 x 15 3-blade aluminum Michigan Wheel. WOT with a light load is 5000-5100 rpms. My problem is that the prop ventilates when the motor is trimmed up to any degree, and will ventilate almost always during a hard turn over 3500 rpms. I don't want to lower the motor because it already throws a "vee" wake off the shaft. So I'm thinking I need another prop.

Several posts back "The Judge" was talking about "triple cupped" props for pontoon boats, but I've not been able to locate one. I currently run a Stiletto 13.75 x 17 on the Montauk and it works great which makes me think about a Stiletto 13.75 x 13 for the pontoon boat. However, I'm still intregued by the seemingly elusive "triple cupped" prop. Who makes one, does anyone know, and is it marketed just for pontoon boats?

Take it to a prop shop or send to General Prop in Bradenton FL and tell them you want a pontoon cup. You might hav eto have it repitched lower though because the extra cup will probably bring you down another 200rpm. Not sure if worth all that for an alum prop. Cupping is cheap however, sometimes free if you bring it to General. I would talk to Tom Clark on his opinion on the stilletos, plus he has the best price in my opinion.

Bombardier makes triple cupped SST props for your application. There are good online sources for these props with very fair prices.

If you were to try a Stiletto, I'm not sure they have anything with that low a pitch. A 13" Advantage I will perform like a 15" OMC/Bombardier. I do not think they have anything in a four blade with that low a pitch. I'll look into it...

You may want their SST prop #175013, 13-3/4" x 13" TC (Triple Cupped)

The best price I can find for this prop is $325 from Propeller WareHouse.

Tom and Nick,

Thanks for your help and information. I had not heard of the Propeller WareHouse. It's going to be a leap of faith to shell out $325 for the prop, but considering the limited options I think I'll give it a go.

Thanks again, I'll let you know the outcome.

best regards---knothead

Hot off the presses! Stiletto announces a new line of propellers made specifically for pontoon, deck and utility boats. The new line is called Star I (for 40 to 70 HP motors) and Star II (for 75 to 140 HP motors.)

A 14" x 13" Star II for a Johnson 90 HP motor would be Stiletto part #24013. I can offer you that prop for $225 delivered.
