I have a 1969 13' whaler with the 1985 mercury 35hp. Would someone please advise the pros and cons of changing to the 30hp Honda? During my recent remodel I estimate that I added in the vicinity of 100lbs or so with new deck and console. My reason for changing to the Honda would be to acquire a quieter engine that appears to be in the recommended weight range (178 lbs).

Thanks!

Well for starters you have a new engine that has a warranty...#1 pro. #1 con is it is gonna set you back some mucho $$$. It weighs about the same as your 35 but will burn 1/2 the gas so you can run all day on a 6gal tank....literally(won't need to cary as much fuel). That 35 is not the strongest 35 out there so that 30 will probably outperform it. Resale will be better and your old engine will still bring a decent $$ if running & looking good.
