I have owned 5 13' sports, 2 with 25's, 1-30hp, 1-35hp, and now a 40hp. I always claimed these boats are barges and more hp does not do diddly unless carrying a load. Well that is TRUE if you do NOT have PTnT. I just put a CMC PT-130 on mine with a 1994 Rude 40hp and mounted it ALL the way up so she is about 4" higher than on transom. Runs the same as before with a little less draft...UNTIL you trim that pig out. Boat goes from a neat little runabout to a small race boat that dances accross the water. Damn thing is dangerous. Still rides like crap and beats you to death but PTnT makes this boat a TOTALLY different animal. I have not GPS'd it yet as I misplaced my handheld but I will soon. I am also waiting for my SS prop to come via snail mail(been a month, long story). Now for the setup...way too heavy but what can I do. The CMC is about 46lbs and sets it back 6" so she sits WAAAY low in the water. About an inch lower than without which puts about 2-3" of water in the splash well. I do not really recommend anyone doing this setup but I had no choice and overall I am very pleased with how i use it. It is fine if a person is in middle seat. When I am in slow zones I have to sit in the middle or I can only go just above idle. Any more juice and bow goes up and wake gets big. No biggie but just FYI. CMC now makes a PT-35(24lbs) but it is only 11" wide and my mounting bolts are either 13 or 14". Older engines can probably get away with one but this 40hp engine has the same pattern as a 115hp, etc.
So to all you out there dropping 50 & 60hp on a 13' I still say WHY? but I can see your point, especially if you raced Go-Karts. I would NEVER let my kid run this boat, I know I would have died a very young death if this was my boat years ago(it is, but that's a longer story). I still think a 25-30hp is all you need and I will repower one day with just that but for now...hopefully I won't flip it.
Binkie...let's go racing!
