I have an '82 1.6L crossflow 140. Later in the 80s, the 140 went to a 2.0L V4 looper (I am told).
Question: Do they both have the same mpg? Does 'Looper' technology cancel the larger displacement/weight? Are they BOTH thirsty? Any advantage to the 2.0 Litre motor in the mileage arena?

They are both thirsty.

The 2.0 looper is going to be more powerful than your crossflow because:

It has more displacement

It is propshaft rated, not crankshaft rated like your crossflow

Its a looper, which is a more efficient combustion method and makes more hp per ounce of fuel. It will also rev higher

Its also 60 pounds heavier which cancels some of the positives.

If your current engine is in good shape stick with it, the benefits of switching don't outweigh the benefits. Any fuel savings will be negligible

The 140 looper is not a great choice because they use the v6 gearcase which is heavy. A 120 looper would be better in my opinion. They are heavy though baout 380lbs I think and are half of a V8 OMC. Great engines though.
